Footgolf to herald eight Captain One Golf Society’s major championship

Organisers of the annual Captain One Golf Society major championship have mentioned that the eighth edition of the championship will have a footgolf competition as a curtain-raiser for the annual event.

FootGolf is a precision sport, a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf, being more closely related to golf. The rules largely correspond to the rules of golf.

President and founder of Captain One Golf Society, Mr Pius Ayeh Appiah, explained that the inclusion of footgolf was to make participants have a relaxed atmosphere before the main competition.

He said the footgolf event would be held at the Obuasi Golf Club on Friday, January 17, 2025, and would be open to golfers and non-golfers who would want to try some kicks.

The President who also doubles as the chairperson for the organising committee, explained that the eighth major championship would be played on two courses, adding “our event is gaining momentum, and we do not want it to just be a golf event. “Therefore, we have decided to make a few changes, so day one of the competition, which is January 18, 2025, will be held at the Obuasi Golf Club, while day two, which is January 19, 2025, will also be held at the Royal Golf Club, Kumasi.”

He also mentioned that up for grabs is GH12,000 in cash or voucher depending on whether the overall winner is a professional golfer or an amateur golfer.

Competition Secretary for Captain One Golf Society, Mr Solomon Harbey, also added that registration for the eighth major was pecked at GH500 and GH450 for male and female non-members of the society, respectively.

He, however, noted that members of the society were required to register at a fee of GH450 and GH400 for male and female golfers, respectively, while junior golfers would be allowed to participate for free.

He noted that the registration was for the two-day competition.

Captain One Golf Society is a society made up of golfers and non-golfers with the sole aim of developing the game of golf at the grassroots level through the Captain One Kids Project.

The eighth major championship is sponsored by the Obuasi Golf Club, Royal Golf Club, Mosak Photography, RK Cliste, Flo-Polo Designs, Servaco PPS, Run on Time Engineering, 3K Logistics and Construction, Smart Procurement and Logistics, and Industrial Procurement Services.

Pra River Golf Links Outdoor Shama Kid's Project

The Captain One Golf Society, a group of golfers and non-golfers in partnership with the PRA River Golf Links have officially outdoored the Shama Kids Project, a programme set to train vulnerable kids in the game of golf.

The Captain One Golf Kids Project is focused on nurturing golf talents in the country while ensuring golf is introduced to kids in every golf club across the country.

The Shama Kids project attracted kids from the communities within the catchment areas of the golf club and would be trained by resident professional golfers of the club. The Founder and owner of Pra River Golf Links, Prof. George William Kofi Intsiful, gave a brief historical background of the golf course and mentioned that plans are underway to upgrade the facility with a clubhouse with middle and high earning income residential facilities to meet international standards and practice.

He commended the members and leadership of the Society for their proactiveness to train the young ones to fill in the ageing gap in the sport.

The Chief Patron of the Society, Mr Lee Mensah, who officially launched the project reiterated the importance of training a new pool of talents for the future of the game. He advised the kids to take their training seriously and adhere to the instructions from their coaches. He mentioned some of the benefits of playing golf and urged the kids to take up the sport to get more opportunities.

The Competition Secretary, Mr Solomon Harvey advised the girls to be better at the sport and hinted of plans to launch the project across all the regions and train kids to play the game of golf. “We have been organising our own tournament which includes the kids. And hopefully next year we will have one and by then you would have known the basics to compete. "As you know, golf trains you to be punctual. We also get health benefits when we play golf,” he stressed.

A resident professional golfer, Kofi Instiful, will be training the kids at the Pra River Golf Links for the project. Ayishatu Aminu, a beneficiary and an Ambassador for the Captain One Kids Project, from Safe-Child Advocacy, Kumasi, shared her testimony with the kids and stated the Captain One Golf Kids Project has been one of the best things to have happened to her. She said before joining the project, she had a perception that golf was for the rich but that notion has been debunked since joining saying, ’with golf, what you need is discipline, determination and dedication to the course.’’
She urged the young ones to embrace the opportunity given them and they will go far as she is now able to meet and greet important personalities in the country whom she wouldn’t have met in her life but because of golf, she is able to walk on the same course and chat with. In a speech read on his behalf, President of the Captain One Golf Society, Pius Ayeh Appiah, expressed excitement over the event saying, “Captain One always wanted to bring golf to everyone, especially children so they would capture the interest from the beginning and grow to become professionals.”

That, he said, would also demystify the idea that golf belonged to the elite in society because the Kids Project offered the opportunity for children from different backgrounds to play. Mr. Appiah noted that they will continue to give out their best for the project to give hope to the young talented but needy golfers and appealed to corporate bodies, civil society organisations and individuals to also come on board to support the project.

After the launch, the girls were taken through the basic golf practice, the equipment used and other lessons for beginners.

Captain One Golf Society Gets Financial Support From Fitness and Wellness Expert Roberta

A fitness and wellness expert, Trezebinski Claudia Roberta, from Bahrain, has presented an undisclosed cash to Captain One Golf Society to support junior golf development in the country.

The cash was handed over to the President of Captain One Golf Society, Mr Pius Ayeh Appiah. Presenting the cash, the Chief Executive Officer of Pilates Bahrain Studio Recreational Centre, Trezebinski Claudia Roberta, explained that she was motivated to donate after witnessing the junior golfers play at the society’s 7th Major golf tournament at the Royal Golf Club, Kumasi.

She added that before going to Kumasi to watch the kids play, she had heard about the success story of Captain One Golf Society’s kids project currently running at all major golf courses in Ghana.

She said, “as a golfer, I get excited when underprivileged people are given hope and an opportunity to showcase their talents and this falls directly in line with what Captain One is doing, so I am very pleased to contribute to change the lives of these kids.”

President and Founder of Captain One Golf Society, Mr Pius Ayeh Appiah, thanked Roberta for the support and assured her that the money would be used for its intended purpose.

He mentioned that Captain One Golf Society had a kid’s golf development programme across the various golf clubs in Ghana therefore the money would go a long way to support the growth of the programme and help train the young kids in the sport.

He also added that the society was now a fully registered non-profit organisation therefore they would work towards making golf a sport for all, especially the vulnerable and underprivileged in society.

The President therefore called for more support and urged Ghanaians to debunk the notion that golf was a sport for the elite.

Captain One Golf Society currently runs active programmes at Obuasi and Shama as well as Kumasi.
